Javier Martinez Raises Funds for Blood Cancer Research

Local Boxer Takes On Extraordinary Fight:
Javier Martinez Raises Funds for Blood Cancer Research
in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man of the Year Competition

March 4, 2012 – Albany, N.Y. – As the son of an oncologist, Javier Martinez grew up visiting young cancer patients at the hospital. Now, at age 23, Martinez is a professional boxer dedicated to fighting for more than his undefeated record.

Martinez has been named a candidate for the Upstate New York chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Man & Woman of the Year.” The campaign lasts eight weeks, from March 9 through May 4, in which candidates get to know local survivors as they compete to raise funds for the worthy cause.

“This isn’t just a fight. It’s a war,” said Javy Martinez. “The odds seem insurmountable, and the causalities are numerous and vast. But I truly believe that together, through teamwork and perseverance, we can win. They never believed they would find a cure for Polio or Rabies, and then the knockout came in the form of a cure. A vaccine created by doctors with backing from the community. That’s why we are fighting, to one day eradicate this horrible disease and save countless lives. This is worth fighting for.”

Martinez is kicking off his fundraising at ARES Promotions Fight Night 8 on March 10 at the Empire State Plaza in Albany. A portion of tickets sold by Martinez will be donated to the cause. “ARES is honored to support Javy in his quest for Man of the Year and help raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,” said Adam Neary, President, ARES Promotions. “ARES is always looking to give back in ways that support our fighters, our team, our community. We wish Javy the best of luck.”

About the “Man & Woman of the Year”
Each year, in communities across the country, dynamic, passionate candidates engage in a spirited competition to earn The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Man & Woman of the Year” titles, by raising funds for blood cancer research. The candidates compete in honor of children who are local blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. Every dollar counts as one vote, and the titles are awarded to the man and woman with the most votes at the end of ten weeks; the top local fundraisers in the country win the national titles.

Man & Woman candidates are goal-oriented and compassionate. Their relentless efforts are focused on making life better for hundreds of thousands of patients battling blood cancers: leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Funds raised by Man & Woman of the Year participants are used for lifesaving blood cancer research; financial assistance to cover patient expenses for transportation, medication and testing; free educational materials and events for patients and their families; and local programs such as Family Support Groups and First Connection, a peer-to-peer counseling program
