PROSPECT

NIGERIAN HEAVYWEIGHT - LATEEF "POWER" KAYODE WINS HIS 5TH FIGHT BY 2nd ROUND KO

December 21, 2008 - Last night, the Hollywood  Park Casino in Inglewood, CA was the venue for the Kahren Harutyunyan's Art of Boxing Promotion SEASON BEATINGS fight night. It was a great evening of boxing with the main even featuring former world champions. Roman Karmazin showed enough to still be in the mix for a future title shot and moving up to middleweight and defeating former world champion Bronco McKart before a crowd of 800 by a 12-round unanimous decision

But the night belonged to Lateef  "Power" Kayode and his continued pursuit of the heavyweight crown. This was a special night for many reasons. It was Lateef's last fight of the year, his 5th in as many months. All ending in victory, his last four all ending by knockouts coming in the second round. It was also a night that set the stage for what hopefully will be a long standing relationship between student and mentor. Saturday night  ..more

Unified and Undisputed Hopes for 2009

By Michael Amakor

Suitland Md, December 20, 2008 - With the explosion of alphabet boxing associations organizing championship bouts for TV networks, the public has become confused about who the real boxing champions are today, and there is a long standing debate as to whether the multitude of champions in each division are good for boxing in general. They days when identifiable phenoms like Mohammed Ali and Mike Tyson attracted millions of fans to boxing are long gone and fans are screaming for a dominant champion like Mike Tyson to re-emerge.

But at no other time in boxing history have so many entertaining, but meaningless (at least to the public) fights taken place transferring the championship batton to all comers at a blinding pace and further distorting the public's perception of the real champions in each division like is ...more

December 20, 2008 - On November 18, 1921 Johnny Dundee won on a fifth round disqualification over George " KO " Chaney to become the first recognized champion of the junior lightweight division. He would lose and then regain the title in a pair of 1923 fifteen rounders against Jack Bernstein. Dundee would lose the title for good in 1924 via a ten round points loss to Steve " Kid " Sullivan. In 1925 Sullivan would lose the title to Mike Ballerino. Later that year Ballerino would be stopped by Tod Morgan.

Morgan would reign for four years before he was halted in two rounds by Benny Bass. In the summer of 1931 Bass would lose the title to the talented Kid Chocolate. In 1933 Frankie Klick stopped the " Kid ". It would be sixteen years before the title would resurface again. DAWSON VS TARVER IS ON

JOHNSON LASHES OUT AGAINST DAWSON-TARVER II

HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 18 – It takes a lot to get Glen Johnson angry, but when he heard that a March 14th rematch between Chad Dawson and Antonio Tarver had been finalized, he couldn’t hold back his feelings.

“This is a disgrace to the sport,” said Johnson, the former light heavyweight champ who is currently the most avoided man in boxing. “Didn’t anyone watch the first fight? Do they think anything different will happen the second time around? HBO should have put this fight on a month earlier, so it could have been the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre Part Two.”

Johnson, who is currently awaiting a fight against the winner of the WBC light heavyweight title bout between Adrian Diaconu and Silvio Branco, has good reason to be angry, considering that he has already beaten Tarver and that most objective observers believe he beat Dawson as well in their controversial April 2008 match. But neither will fight him again, opting instead to ...more

The Contender

Erick Vega: This Isn’t The End For Me!

December 18, 2008: For Erick “Dynamite” Vega, making it on season 4 of the Contender was not only a dream come true but an effort that took him many years to get the major recognition he badly craved. “It was great to be on the show” said Vega who just missed a spot on the 2004 Mexican Olympic team that produced rising stars Alfredo Angulo and Abner Mares. “The exposure was unbelievable”.

Vega’s hopes of winning The Contender Championship were unfortunately derailed by Akinyemi “AK 47” Laleye. Vega fought hard and badly hurt Laleye in the fifth round but dropped a unanimous decision in an entertaining contest. Vega was honored to be a part of the same series that helped Sergio Mora, Peter Manfredo, Alfonso Gomez, and Steve Forbes land big ...more

An Open Letter to the Boxing Writers Association of America

By Ted Sares

December 18, 2008 - It is my understanding that membership in your fine organization entitles members to the privilege of casting ballots for inductees into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. In my view, this privilege should also carry with it a responsibility to ensure that fighters from all regions of the globe are represented, particularly since the word “International“ is set forth in the Hall‘s name.

Clearly, this year’s selections are excellent ones. Three-time heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis along with American bantamweight champion Orlando Canizales and South African junior lightweight champion Brian Mitchell are rock solid choices, and so are the posthumous honorees; namely middleweight champion William "Gorilla" Jones, welterweight champion "Mysterious" Billy Smith and middleweight champion Billy Soose..

But I question whether the selections went far enough? What about Asian fighters who seem to be ignored every year? And each year a potential inductee is passed over, it becomes that....more

WBA World Heavyweight Champion Ruslan Chagaev Is Back In Action

December 18, 2008 - Ahead of his next title defence: „My misfortune was Valuev's luck - I hope that he wins so I can beat him again and show who the champion is."

It was officially announced at a press conference that WBA world champion Ruslan Chagaev (24-0-1, 17 KOs) will face unbeaten Carl Davis Drumond on February 7th at the Stadthalle in Rostock, Germany. Chagaev will return from an Achilles tendon injury and he has proved his good fitness in order to challenge Carl Davis Drumond (26-0, 20 KOs) in a fight for the WBA heavyweight title.

At the "Yachthafenresidenz Hohe Düne“ in Rostock-Warnemünde the world champion answered the question of the press. Ruslan Chagaev: „My injury was a big mishap for me and very lucky for Valuev," stated Chagaev. "But now I'm fit again now and look forward to the fight against Drumond. This is a good test. Now on Saturday Valuev boxes against Holyfield, and Nikolai claims to be the world champion. But, he is just a substitute champion. He beat Ruiz, whom I also clearly defeated. I will prove to Valuev and all the 'experts' in the next fight that I am the true champion.“

USS Cunningham Sails On, Battle Scarred, Not Sunk As Reported!

December 15, 2008: Recently deposed IBF cruiserweight world champion, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, speaks out for the first time since the epic battle at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on December 11th, which saw Tomasz ‘Goral’Adamek from Jersey City, NJ. capture his crown by a contentious split decision.
Steve, who has been receiving the highest accolades from luminaries in the sport and media for his performance during the action packed bout, which is being hailed by all sectors of the media as ‘The Fight Of The Year’, spoke shortly after his return to his home town of Philadelphia after taking a well deserved short break.

IBF Bantamweight Champion King Kong Agbeko Speaks

By Ike Enwereuzor - December 15, 2008 / Read Preview

Q: How would you describe your performance against William Gonzalez?
A: I'll say that William Gonzalez is my toughest fight, maybe because I was out of the ring for a long time, I was a little rusty.

Q: How would you compare your fight with Luis Perez to William Gonzalez?
A: They were both tough fighters but Perez was more experienced and hits more. I saw Luis Perez tape but I never saw William Gonzalez fight before. I had to figure him out in the ring. Thank God I defended my belt successfully. I was a little slow in the fight too, I wasn't 100% but the most important thing is that I won the fight. I have never lost a fight.

Q: What's your impression of Gerry Penalosa, the WBO champ in your weight class?
A: He's a great champion with good experience but we need to unify this bantamweight division to find out who is the best Bantamweight. I'm willing to fight other champions in the bantamweight division so we can prove who is the best. They consider Gerry Penalosa the best, we don't know until we fight each other to find out the best. I saw Penalosa against Gonzalez.

Q: When did you start your amateur boxing career?
A: I started my amateur in 1994, I was in the national team called the Black bombers, we went to a lot of international tournaments even the commonwealth 1998 in .........Malaysia.

Shaun George to Calzaghe: Boxing is Not Dying!

NEW YORK December 15, 2008 -Ring Magazine light-heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe recently issued a statement in which he called boxing "a dying sport." Light-heavyweight contender Shaun George took offense to those words, criticizing the undefeated Welshman for being part of the problem. "All he is doing is fighting the older guys," says Shaun George, 17-2-2 (8 KO), a native of Brooklyn, NY. "He's not letting the younger fighters in the division come up. The way boxing creates new stars is by having the younger guys pick up where the older guys leave off. By fighting people in their 40's like Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins, Calzaghe is feeding into the problem.

"Boxing is not dying, but what hurts the sport is when the top stars don't want to fight the rising contenders in their divisions. Why not fight a young guy like me or Chad Dawson? ......more

Junior middleweight James Moore unbowed after loss to NABF champion Yuri Foreman

New York December 15, 2008 -Although junior middleweight James Moore, a native of County Wicklow , Ireland , who fights out of Queens , New York , lost a one-sided decision to NABF champion Yuri Foreman in Atlantic City on December 13, he is undeterred in his quest to move up the boxing ladder.

Moore, 16-2 (10 KOS), never stopped trying to catch up to the fleet-footed and quick-fisted Foreman, who saw his record to improve to 27-0 (8 KOS ). The 10 round bout was televised on ShoBox: The New Generation.

“My goal was to chop him down, but I just couldn’t do it,” said Moore, who suffered an injured ear and a cut on his left eyelid that required 7 stitches. “The ear affected my balance, but that is not what cost me the fight. My trainer, Lennox Blackmoore, had given me a good game plan, but I didn’t stick to it because it was so frustrating trying to catch up to him. Yuri is a very good fighter, ..more

Adamek vs Cunningham Post-Fight Ring Quotes

Newark Dec, 11, 2008

Steve Cunningham: “My game plan tonight was to box. I thought I had him in the fourth, so I went for a knockout and he caught me. It cost me the fight. That’s boxing.

“He didn’t hit that hard. They were all flash knockdowns. Even though I never felt I was hurt, you’ve got to give Adamek credit for the knockdowns. Other than that, I put in some good work. I did my best. The judges favored Tomasz tonight, but I’d love to do it again.

“I feel bad because I lost my IBF belt tonight but I feel good for the cruiserweight division. I think Adamek and I showed how exciting this division can be.”

Tomasz Adamek (winner): “I knew after the first round that he could not hurt me. I knew I could go forward always, like I did against Paul Briggs in the two fights I had with him. Even when his punches connected, I was okay. I also knew that every straight right would put him down and they did. I have faster hands and I could always hit him with one more shot than he could hit me with.

Thanks to my coach Andrew Gimitruk for teaching me ring discipline. This has helped me greatly when I would lose the first half of a round because I knew in the end I would come back and win it.

I could imagine going to heavyweight someday. I feel that good at cruiserweight.”

Joseph King Kong Agbeko (winner):  “I think I deserved a unanimous decision. Gonzalez gave me good competition, but I think I clearly beat him. He was a tough guy but he had never been in the ring with King Kong, the little man with the big punches.”

William Gonzalez: “The headbutts I received really knocked me off my game. I won the second round and was feeling good but the bleeding from my eyebrows were distracting me.”

His 8 round bash with Williams (rounds were 7-1│6-2│6-2) is being hailed by critiques as one of the more competitive and entertaining bouts on the Roy Jones/Joe Calzaghe HBO PPV card. Edouard is very appreciative of being chosen to fight on the card. “I grew up watching both fighters. I watched Roy a little more than Calzaghe simply because of location. Both fighters are phenomenal class acts, definite hall of famers, and I count it an honor to have fought on the same card with them.”

Junior middleweight James Moore relishes the role of the underdog against NABF champion Yuri Foreman - Photos by Peter Frutkoff

James Moore, 16-1 (10 KOS), a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, who fights out of Queens, New York, relishes the role of the underdog in the waning days of his preparation to wrest the NABF title from Yuri Foreman, 26-0 (8 KOS), at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on December 13.

The 10 round bout will open the ShoBox: the New Generation broadcast headlined by WBO junior welterweight champion Kendall Holt defending his crown against Demetrius Hopkins. Top Rank is promoting the show.

Many boxing experts believe that the quick-handed and fleet-footed Foreman, who is rated in the top-ten by all of the major sanctioning bodies, will be much too elusive for the offensive-minded Moore .

“All of the experts picked Oscar De La Hoya to beat Manny Pacquiao, and we know what happened there,” said the 30-year-old Moore who recently returned from a month-long training camp at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles , where Pacquiao prepared for De La Hoya.

“The experts have no way of measuring the desire that burns within me, especially for this fight. In essence, I’ve been training for this fight for my whole life. A victory will really shoot me ..more

Ted the Bull’s 2008 Boxing Awards
By Ted Sares (October 12, 2008)

1) Pound for Pound Fighter of the Year: Manny Pacquiao: While Joe Calzaghi became a Legend Killer in 2008 and Tony Margorito was ultra compelling, Pacquiao brought to mind the great Henry Armstrong as he dismantled Oscar De La Hoya, slaughtered David Diaz and beat super tough Juan Manuel Marquez. And he did this in three different weight classes. Clearly, Pac Man is the MAN for 2008.

2) Fight of the Year: Mtagwa vs. Villa (November 7, 2008): In a fight that gave new meaning to the words “fury” and “courage,” Rogers “The Tiger” Mtagwa (25-12-2) and Mexican warrior Tomas “El Norteno” Villa (20-6-4) engaged in almost ten rounds of wild ebb and flow savagery. The battle was held in Tucson..

The first round was one of pure fury in which both engaged in legal, back-and-forth assault and battery and the crowd was up and roaring in disbelief when the bell rang. Villa’s punches were shorter and sharper; Mtagwa’s were wider but seemed to be more menacing. Both ..more

WBC SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION TIMOTHY BRADLEY READY TO FIGHT THE WINNER OF HOLT-HOPKINS WITH THE SURVIVOR DEFENDING TITLE AGAINST MANNY PACQUIAO

TOTOWA, NJ ( December 9, 2008) – Undefeated World Boxing Council (WBC) super lightweight champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY will be in Atlantic City this weekend to scout out his next opponent. Bradley will be ringside watching World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight champion Kendall Holt defend his title against undefeated contender Demetrius Hopkins this Saturday night. The fight will be televised live on SHOWTIME from Atlantic City ’s Boardwalk Hall.

“I want fights. LOTS of fights,” said Bradley who will make his next title defense in the first quarter of 2009 against the winner of the Holt-Hopkins rumble. “I have a lot of respect for Holt and Hopkins which is why I’m getting an up-close-and-personal look at both men from a ringside seat. I think an even better fight would be for the winner of our fight to defend the title against Manny Pacquiao."

"Bob Arum and I have discussed making a 140-pound mini tournament to determine the best fighter in the division," said Gary Shaw, Bradley's co-promoter. "If Manny wants to go down to 140 pounds, Bob and I think the best opponent would be the legitimate world champion of the division -- the winner of a battle between WBC and WBO champions. It would be the division's most meaningful fight Let’s see how Manny does when he takes on someone under 30.”

Book Review

“REELIN' IN THE YEARS: BOXING AND MORE”

 By John Howard

A sophomore jinx is a term that refers to a second (sophomore) effort that fails to live up to the first effort. This can happen in ones sophomore year in college, a second year of playing professional sports, or a second attempt at writing a book. With his second book, “Reelin’ In The Years: Boxing And More,” Ted Sares has landed a solid left hook to the body.

Sares has lived and breathed boxing his entire life. Therefore, it’s an impossible task to adequately review and do this collection the justice it deserves. Sares has a deep love for — and encyclopedic knowledge of — the fight game dating back some 60 years. We are taken along on a historical journey though America starting with the authors humble beginnings as a young boy from the northwest side of Chicago. The reader is taken back to a time in the 1950s when boys and men bonded without knowing they were bonding. It was a time of innocence in America.

With a cult-like following on East Side Boxing, where he is respectfully known by the moniker of “Ted the Bull,” Sares, a private investor by trade and former parks district amateur boxer, describes in microscopic detail the countless fights he’s attended in person or first witnessed through the screen of a nine-inch black and white Admiral TV. With his straight-shooting, highly opinionated style of writing, the reader is taken along at full-tilt boogie through an incredible and sometimes ..more

MANNY HAPPY RETURNS! The World Continues to Applaud Manny Pacquiao's Blockbuster VictoryOver Oscar De La Hoya

LAS VEGAS, NEV (December 9, 2008) – Even as boxing’s pound-for-pound superstar MANNY PACQUIAO and his wife Jinkee jet back to the Philippines to await the birth of their baby, media and fans alike are still applauding his eight-round destruction of “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya, which took place Saturday night at the soldout MGM Grand Garden Arena. The victory, his third of the year in as many different weight divisions, capped off a year best described as Henry Armstrongesque. Pacquiao captured the WBC super featherweight title in February by defeating Juan Manual Marquez and the WBC lightweight title by knocking out defending champion David Diaz in June. Pacquiao’s stoppage of De La Hoya was fought at the welterweight limit. Armstrong, the great Hall of Famer, is best known for being the only man in boxing history to hold three world titles simultaneously, a feat he accomplished 70 years ago when he won world titles at featherweight, welterweight and lightweight (in that order) during a nine-month span between November 1937 and August 1938.

HBO Sports will present Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao, the exclusive replay of their welterweight showdown, This Saturday! December 13 (4:45 p.m. ET / 1:45 p.m. PT with a same night replay at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO. The Sports team, which was ringside for the live event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, will call all the action. The replay will be available in HDTV

Cestus Fighters. “Baby Cobra” Gomez and “Nighthawk” Luna. Destroy Foes! Ferreryo Wins in First IBA Defense;

Last Friday (December 5, 2008) two thousand excited robust fans again, packed the sold out arena at the Civic Center in the beautiful historical city of Laredo , Texas . Recon Garza Promotions in association with Los Dos Laredos Boxing Production and Cestus Management promoted the “Friday Nite Championship Boxing” event. The card, featured sensational prospects Rodolfo “BABY COBRA” Gomez, Robert “NIGHTHAWK” Luna Jr. and

IBA Latino Heavyweight Champion Hector “HURRICANE” Ferreyro. Each fighter delivered dramatic performances, and gave the fans what they where looking for; which was action packed fights and brutal knockouts. The whole fight card will be shown on www.Gofightlive.tv

The excitement got underway immediately when Cestus Junior Welterweight powerhouse, Robert “NIGHTHAWK” Luna Jr. from San Antonio TX (2-0-0 w/1KO) entered the ring and took on the heavily muscled Mike Hull. The “NIGHTHAWK” (142 pounds) dispensed with the customary “feel out” process typical of the opening minute of the first round as he went right to work landing hard thudding shots to both the head and body of Hull (143 pounds). The power of Luna Jr. was immediately apparent as “ Hull ” had no answers for Luna Jr.’s relentless assault. The “NIGHTHAWK” continually smashed Hull , hurting him badly on multiple occasions which caused the referee to step in and call a halt to the proceedings within the first two minutes of the opening round. As soon as the referee stopped the bout, the former Iraq and Afghanistan Air ..more

The “Event” Fighter: A Pre-Fight Analysis of Pacquaio vs Oscar De La Hoya             By Ted Sares:

December 2, 2008 - "I tried to do the impossible on paper -- beat the middleweight champ coming up from 130 pound."--Oscar De La Hoya

You know, it’s going to be boxing history. You know, it will be boxing record if I beat De La Hoya….So that’s why I’m so focused on this fight. -Manny Pacquiao

Toward the end of Iron Mike Tyson’s career, I heard it said that he could still fill an arena even if he fought a Kangaroo. As I recall, when he fought “The Clones Colossus,” Kevin McBride, in his last fight on June 6, 2005 at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., the arena was packed to the rafters. Mike skills had deteriorated considerably and he was coming off a stunning KO loss to Danny Williams a year earlier. In fact, Mike fought once a year between 2001 and 2005 and each fight was took on major event status. Heck, even his 2006 exhibition with Corey “T-Rex” Sanders in Youngstown, Ohio on the ill-conceived Mike Tyson World Tour was looked upon with great interest and was a pay-per-view event.

De La Hoya: At this stage in his storied career, Oscar De La Hoya is no Mike Tyson, but he is well past his prime. Still, when he meets Many Pacquiao this Saturday at the MGM  ..more

SPOTLIGHT ON KING KONG AGBEKO

A star was born on Showtime Saturday September 29, 2007 as Ghana’s little-known Joseph Agbeko (25-1, 22KO's) outclassed and out punched Nicaragua’s Luis Perez to become IBF bantamweight champion with an overwhelming seven-round victory.

Insiders knew that the New York-based Agbeko was the real thing but I do not think very many people would have expected him to dominate Perez. Agbeko was enormously impressive, and while Chad Dawson did what he had to do in fine style by blowing away the overmatched substitute Epifanio Mendoza, for boxing critics it was the fighter from Ghana who stole the show.

Agbeko was in the tradition of tough, well-schooled boxers from out of Ghana such as the great Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, David “Poison” Kotei, Floyd “Klutei”Robertson, Nana Konadu and, going back a bit, the old "Black Flash" Roy Ankrah (in the days when Ghana was the (continue)

Prefight Analysis: Pacquiao vs Oscar de La Hoya

By Mortz Ortigoza

PHILIPPINES (December 02, 2008) - Of all the fistic wars both Oscar ‘Golden Boy” de la Hoya and Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao had undergone, their December 6, 2008 Dream Match would probably be the physically risky campaign they would be facing.

After eight years in this Hurt & Bruise Industry, the Golden Boy would be shedding precious fats and muscles and still expect to maintain his prowess for 48 minutes stamina-extracting ring combat at the dais. Pacman for the first time has climbed the 147 Junior Welterweight limit by packing himself with fats and muscles.

Thus my poser: Would the four-inches-deficit-in-height Filipino could still retain his renowned speed and heavy handed left that gives him so much fame and fortune – as what nuclear warheads are to North Korea ’s diminutive dictator Kim Jong il before the threatened and jittery members of the world community.

Would dela Hoya melts like a candle in the middle of the rounds after absorbing the barrage of bone crushing upper cuts on the lower parts of his body where he burnt a significant chunk of those fats and muscles that could help protect his lower torso? This tragedy happened to Eric...continue

It's my experience, in 40 years of of boxing, either you're going to be a fighter or you're going to be a politician. You can't be both. You going to be a politician you better leave that boxing ring alone. I'll tell you that right now. You have to be a successful fighter. All you have to do to do is be a fighter. You cannot be a fighter, a politician singer, a belly dancer, all the stuff you are trying to be. It’s not going to work in the boxing ring. All we know is fighting. That's what we know. That's what we live for. .

By PETER’S TRAINER STACY MCKINLEY

McKinley: Keep in mind, he out boxed twice one of the greatest boxers of the past 25 years, James Tony. He's not just a puncher. The man can box, too. He does whatever he has to do to win. And I'll talk about the judges in Germany

Boente: Even punches you in the back of the head to win.

Peter: It was clean punches on the chin. Everybody says I hit in the back of the head. Why do you turn your head? You're a boxer. Don't turn your head. You bob and weave. It’s a right hand. That's your head.

I'm too fast for them. I don't care. I didn’t hit anybody behind the head. I hit him right point, get to the target.

I don’t need to hit anyone behind the head. If you turn your head I hit you, because that's not your face. A good boxer should bob and weave. Move side to side behind the head.
