The Rock Crushes the Ultimate Warrior

[September 20, 2014 – Ringside by Pattee Mak]

mchunuNo this wasn’t wrestling but professional boxing. Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu of Johannesburg, SA vs. Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson of Philadelphia, PA fighting for Mchunu’s NABF Cruiserweight Title. Throughout the bout Mchunu kept jabbing and working his defense even when Wilson was backing up Mchunu. Mchunu landing the cleaner shots. By the end of the 6th round Wilson was taking too many punches to the face. His nose is bright red. My favorite round was the 7th when both fighters exchanged punches in a rockem sockem kind of round. In the 10th round the referee deducted a point away from Mchunu for holding. Judges scored the bout 96-93; 99-90 and 98-91 all for Mchunu and he retains his NABF Cruiserweight title. Mchunu moves to 17-1, 11 ko’s and Wilson decreases to 13-8-1, 7 Kos.

In the co-main event it was scheduled for 10 rounds but Karl “Dynamite” Dargan of Philadelphia, PENN only need 5 rounds before obtaining the TKO victory against Angino “The Nightmare” Perez of Santo Domingo, DR. Dargan continuously slipping punches and great on defense. During the 3rd round Dargan was down from a slip and Perez took the liberty to punch Dargan while he was down. During the 5th round Dargan dropped Perez with a right upper cut. Perez gets back up and immediately Dargan tries for the knockout at 1:32 in the 5th lands a right cross beautifully on the Nightmare and puts him to sleep. Dargan is the new NABF Lightweight Champ by TKO. Dargan increased his record to 17-0, 9 Ko’s and Perez decreased his record to 16-6, 14 Ko’s. Dargan landed 61% of the power shots in round 5.

Other bouts:

4 rounds – Anthony Everett vs. David Wilson. Swing bout. Although Wilson being very wild with some of his punches continuously worked the jab but couldn’t finish him. Judges scored the bout 3x 40-36 all for Wilson for UD. Wilson increases to 4-0.

4 rounds – Piotr Apostol of Atlantic City, New Jersey vs. Tyrell White of Queens, New York. I was called away from the bout to meet some individuals from the Serbian Parliament. Judges scored the bout 39-37 for Apostol; 40-36 for White and 39-37 for Apostol. Therefore Apostol gets the split decision.

6 rounds – Joseph “Chip” Perez a local fan favorite from East Hartford, CT vs. Agustine Mauras of Lawrence, Massachusetts. This fight was a rematch since their last fight on 7-26-2014 in Boston which was scored a draw. During the weigh in yesterday Chip weighed in at 132, while Mauras struggled on the scale at 134. He had 2 hours to make the weight. The bout was a competitive one. Both fighters exchanged combinations and put up a great fight till the end. I wouldn’t be surprised if this fight was scored a draw again and sure enough the judges scored the fight 58-56 for Mauras; 58-56 for Perez and 57-57 therefore we have a split draw AGAIN. During the post fight interview Mauras thought we should see a 3rd fight between the two of them.

8 rounds – Sullivan Barrera of Miami, Florida vs. Eric Watkins of Harris, New York. During the middle rounds the ref asked for a time out to reprimand both fighters. Barrera continued working the jab and also working to the body. Both fighters exchanged punches. Watkins wasn’t giving up. During round 6 Barrera landed a 1, 2 right on Watkins that drove him to the canvas. Ref immediately stopped the bout at 24 seconds of round 6. Barrera improves his record to 13-0, 8 Kos while Watkins goes to 10-8-1.

4 rounds – Charles Foster a local from New Haven, Ct vs. Robert Jackson of Hampton, VA. Round 1 foster lands a right on Jackson. Jackson slowly falls into the ropes. After he got back up Foster landed another right and the ref called a halt to the bout. Foster 1:51 by TKO Foster.
