Joseph “Chip” Perez Walks Away as the New England Junior Lightweight Champ!!

“Closing Statement” promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports – CES put on another exciting venue at Twin River Casino, Lincoln, Rhode Island. A total of 9 bouts were on the card.

The 8 round main event featured Joseph “Chip” Perez of East Hartford, Connecticut who matched skills against Chazz “Magnificent” McDowell of Yonkers, New York for the vacant New England Junior Lightweight title.

Round 1 McDowell busier than Perez. McDowell landed a left immediately before the end of the bell. Round 2, Perez started being more aggressive after McDowell landed a 1 2. Round 3 and 4, a bit busier than the other 2 rounds. Round 5, Perez landed a strong right along with a combination of punches. McDowell landed a strong right. Great competitive round between both fighters. Round 6, end of the round after the bell, both opponents gave each other the “eyes”. Round 7, both opponents unleashed their power on each other. Round 8, Perez slightly pick up McDowell off of the canvas during the beginning on the round. Judges scored the bout 76-76 even, 77-75 and 78-74 for Perez by MD.

Joseph “Chip” Perez increased his record to 10-1-0 and Chazz “Magnificent” McDowell decreased his record to 6-3-0.

Other bouts included:

Female bantamweight: Ivana Coleman vs. Shelito Vincent. [This is the 2nd time both fighters met up against each other]. Winner by UD, Vincent. All 3 Judges scored it 40-36.

Middleweight: Michael Walchuk vs Thomas Falowo. Winner Falowo by TKO, 43 second into round 5. Walchuk thought the ref stopped the bout too soon.

Super middleweight: Alex Amparo vs. Nick Lavin. [This is the 2nd time both fighters met up against each other]. Winner Amparo by TKO, 57 seconds into round 4. Ref stopped the bout.

Middleweight: Philip Burnette vs. Joey Gardner. Winner Gardner by split decision. Judges scored it 59-56 for Burnette, 58-55 and 57-56 for Gardner.

Light heavyweight: Dennis Ogboo vs. Richard Gingras. Winner Starnino by TKO round 2. Ogboo’s Corner thrown in the towel.

Light heavyweight: “The Vermont Bully” Kevin Cobbs vs. Alexander Mancera. Cobbs bullied his opponent in Round 4 with a fabulous right hand that wobbled Mancera to the canvas. Referee called a halt to the bout, 1 minute, 2 seconds into round 4. Winner Cobbs by TKO.

Super Featherweights: Jamell Tyson vs. Toka Kahn. Referee called a time out, 48 seconds into Round 2 due to a cut over the right eye of Tyson. Based upon advise of medical doctor, the fighters were unable to continue. Therefore it was declared a no contest. UGH. I was looking forward to seeing hot prospect up and coming Kahn to do his thing.

Welterweight: Jon Smith vs. Dinis Paiva Jr. Winner by UD Smith. Judges scored it 39-37, 40-36 and 40-36.
