Delvin Rodriguez – The New IBF North American Junior Middleweight champ.

Ringside by Pattee Mak – May 24, 2013

delvin rodriguezLocal pro boxer Delvin Rodriguez from Danbury, Connecticut took on Freddy Hernandez from Los Angeles, California.  Rodriguez is very familiar fighting at Mohegan Sun as he fought here many times before.

Round 1 Rodriguez landed a couple of clean shots on Hernandez.  Round 2 Hernandez landed a beautiful, clean left hook on Rodriguez.  Round 3 both fighters had an impressive round while a cut appeared above the right eye of Rodriguez.   Round 5  Rodriguez landed an impressive right hand on Hernandez.   Rodriguez snapped the head back on Hernandez with a right.   Round 8 Accidental head butt. Rodriguez stagers.   There’s a cut beneath Hernandez’s eye.   Rodriguez backs up Hernandez against the ropes and opens up an arsenal on him and lands an impressive right hook.   The ringside physician is called to the ring to look at Hernandez’s eye. The bout is stopped 1:37 into the round.   First the ring announcer David Diamente read the judges scorecard as 76-76; 77-75 and 78-74 making Rodriguez winner by majority decision and the new IBF North American junior middleweight champ.  A few minutes later David Diamente announced there was a change in the decision and the ruling was changed to a TKO victory due to cuts were caused by punches.  Both fighters took a whole lot of punches.

Rodriguez increased his record to 28-6-3 and Hernandez decreased his record to 30-5-1.

10 Rounds Co Main Event: Light welterweights Chris Howard from Crossville, TN vs. Issouf Kinda from New York City, NY.  Throughout the bout both fighters were tight, technical fighters while taking their time to land the precession shots.  During the earlier rounds, an accidental head butt occurred. Howard’s face, beneath his left eye started to swell up.   Round 6 Kinda exploded on Howard with multiple combination punches.   Kinda continues to jab to the swollen eye of Howard.  At the end of round 6, due to the  accidental head butt the ringside physician had no other choice but to stop the bout.  The crowd was not happy and expressed their voices.  Howard was definitely disappointed and wanted to continue.   The judges scored the Bout 58-56 for Howard, 59-54 for Kinda and 58-56 for Howard.  Winner by Split Decision Howard.

Howard increases his record to 16-2-1 and Kinda decreased his record to 16-1-0.

4 Rounds:  Excell Holmes vs. Constantin Bejenaru.  So far the best fight of the night.  Two thumbs up. Two aggressive brawling type fighters throwing all out punches.   During round 2, Holmes forehead opened up and increased blood continued pouring out.   The referee called a halt to the fight on the advise of the ringside physician.  Due to the fact that this was scheduled for 4 rounds and the fighters needed to complete 2 rounds in order to go to the scorecards it was concluded this fight was a no contest.  [I would love to see a rematch].

6 Rounds: Doel Carrasquillo vs. Michael Moore.  Winner Moore by UD. Judges scored it 60-54; 60-54 and 59-55.

4 Rounds:  Marqus Jackson vs. Jimmy Williams.  The referee called a halt to the bout immediately after round 3 and before entering into round 4 due to the advise of the ringside physician.  Winner Williams by TKO.

4 Rounds:  Saul Almeida vs. Michael Mitchell.  Winner by UD Mitchell.  All 3 judges scored it the same 40-36.
