Joel Diaz Goes the Distance on ShoBox.

[May 16, 2014 – Mashantucket, Connecticut – Ringside by Pattee Mak]

diazLive boxing returned to Foxwoods Resorts and Casino in Mashantucket, CT. The main event and co-main event was shown live on Showtime on their ShoBox: The New Generation. Super Featherweights Joel Diaz of Palmdale, CA dominated mostly all of this 10 round bout and out boxed Tyler Asselstine from Toronto Canada in the main event. This was an old fashioned boxing match that was competitive on both sides, with Asselstine working angles, but not enough for either of the fighters to get a knock down. At times you didn’t hear too much from the audience except from a heckler. Although Asselstine’s mouth piece came loose more than once, during round 7 referee Danny Schianvone had enough and deducted a point from Asselstine for his mouth piece coming loose. The judges scored the fight all in favor for Diaz by UD, 97-92, 3x.

Diaz increased his perfect no loss record to 16-0, 12 Kos and Asselstine decreased his record to 14-2, 7 Kos.

In the co-main event up and coming light middleweight Frank Galarza out of Brooklyn, New York took on a tough opponent, Sebastian Bouchard from Quebec, Canada.

The opening round started off slow, feeling each other out. Not a whole lot of punches landing in the beginning, by the end of round 1 both opponents were getting more comfortable. Galarza continued his way throughout working the jab, while Bouchard kept coming forward. During round 8, Referee Joey Lupino takes a point deduction away from Galarza for a low blow. There were no knockdowns in this bout. The judges unanimously judged the bout in favor of Galarza. Their scorecard read 77-74, 77-474 and 78-73.

Galarza increased his record to 14-0-2 and Bouchard goes in the opposite direction to 8-1-0, his first loss of his pro career.

6 rounds – Super Featherweights: Bryan “Pee Wee” Cruz vs. Osnel “Prince” Charles. Pee Wee dominated the entire fight, out boxed Charles, landed the heavier punches but Charles didn’t back down which made it a very competitive fight. Both exchanged punches but Pee Wee was a bit busier. Pee Wee from Port Chester, NY had his fans on hand supporting him throughout his bout. The judges scored the bout 59-55, 60-54 and 60-54 all for Pee Wee and he wins by UD. He increased his perfect record to 11-0 and Charles decreases to 10-9-1.

4 rounds – Featherweights – Gervonta Davis vs. Joshua Arocho. After the ending bell of round 2, Arocho did not proceed into round 3 and retired at the bell due to the advice of the ringside physician. During round 2 Arocho took a beating in the ring, while Davis controlled most of the action and wins by TKO. Davis keeps his perfect record, 7 wins, no losses with 7 Ko’s while Arocho decreases to 3-10-4.

4 Rounds – Welterweights: Kareem Martin vs. Azamat Umarzoda. Martin down in round 1 due to a right hand by Umarzoda. Umarzoda goes down by a left hook in round 3. Umarzoda landed a great left hook on Martin during round 4. Referee Danny Schiavone warns Umarzoda of no throwing. The judges scored the bout 38-36 for Martin; 37-37 2x, therefore it was a majority draw.

4 Rounds – Super Middleweights: John Magda vs. Dave Courchaine. Courchaine down three times in round 1. Referee Joey Lupino stopped the bout at 2 minute, 45 seconds into round 1. Magda keeps his perfect record of 6-0, 5 kos and wins by TKO. Courchaine’s record is now 2-4.
